IPL 2025: Kusal Mendis set to replace Jos Buttler in Gujarat Titans squad for remainder of the tournament

Jos Buttler has scored 500 runs for Gujarat Titans so far in the ongoing IPL 2025.

Sri Lanka wicket-keeper batter Kusal Mendis is set to replace England’s Jos Buttler in Gujarat Titans (GT) squad as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to resume on May 17.

In terms of IPL 2025 points, GT hold the first place. They will be trying to keep up their performance when the league resumes on May 17. The Shubman Gill-led team would likely be without some key players during the crucial playoffs stage of the T20 competition.

Due to border tensions between India and Pakistan, the IPL 2025 was halted on May 9. Before long, all of the foreign players departed for their native nations. The BCCI quickly declared the start of the IPL 2025 season on May 17 when the two opposing parties agreed to halt the firing.

Kusal Mendis ditches PSL to play for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025

Buttler’s inclusion in England’s ODI team for the home series against the West Indies, which begins on May 29, is the reason he won’t be able to play in the playoffs if his team qualifies. On the same day, the IPL playoffs get underway.

Before last week, Kusal Mendis was a wicket-keeper batter for the Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The last time he performed for them was on May 7.

According to ESPNcricinfo, he has decided to participate in the IPL, a league he has never played in before, instead of going to Pakistan for the rest of the PSL 2025 because of alleged safety concerns.

The other two wicket-keeping alternatives in GT’s roster are Kumar Kushagra and Anuj Rawat. But in five PSL games, Kusal Mendis has been in excellent form for the Gladiators, scoring 143 runs at a strike rate of 168.

For Kusal Mendis, who had frequently put his name in the IPL auctions but had never been purchased, simply being approached by an IPL team as a replacement is somewhat of a career boost. He is anticipated to join the GT team on Saturday and is reportedly awaiting his Indian visa.

To restart their IPL 2025 campaign, GT will play the Delhi Capitals (DC) in Delhi on May 18. They have three more league games scheduled.

They will then play Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 22 and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on May 25 at their home ground in Ahmedabad.
