Vaughan, Hussain and Atherton react as England back McCullum & Key after Ashes defeat: 'Why are you learning now?'

The decision to continue with the current England management team after the Ashes defeat has drawn strong reactions from former players and commentators. Michael Vaughan, Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton have reacted after Rob Key explained why Brendon McCullum will continue as England head coach.

England recently lost the Ashes series 4-1 in Australia, which led to a review of the team’s performance and management. However, after the review, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to continue with the same leadership group.

Speaking on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, ECB managing director Rob Key said that constantly changing management after every Ashes loss has not helped England in the past. According to him, the team needs to learn from mistakes instead of starting everything from scratch again.

Key said the last few months were very difficult for the team because expectations were high but the results did not go as planned. He added that the coaching staff has been asked to make certain changes to the way they used to operate earlier, especially regarding selecting players.

“We’ve spoken about the fact that we need to be more ruthless in what we’re doing, especially in some of the selections we’ve made. The reason we didn’t do it earlier was because we placed a huge amount of value on loyalty and having a settled team going into the Ashes,” Key said.

“At the start, one of the main things we tried to do was create a relaxed environment for the players. Many English players arrive to play for England in the biggest moment of their careers, and there is a lot of pressure on them. So we wanted to build an environment where they could switch off from the game a bit and not think about cricket all the time,” he added.

Nasser, Vaughan slam England management

Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton also questioned why many of the learnings were being discussed after the Ashes instead of before the series. They suggested that England fans might wonder why these issues were not addressed earlier when the team was preparing for the tour.

“You talk about the learnings. If I was an England fan sitting in there, I’d have gone, ’this is your job, but before the ashes. Not 2 months after the ashes.’ Why are you learning now? Why weren’t you doing these things? Why weren’t all these things put in place? Have you been marking your own homework in the last few months?” Nasser asked.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan also shared his view on the situation. Speaking on the Test Match Special podcast, Vaughan said it is rare for a management team to continue after such a disappointing Ashes result. “There’s not many management groups that deliver something so poor in an Ashes series and get the chance to carry on,” Vaughan said.

“Like me, cricket supporters will be asking how McCullum and Key could make so many bad decisions on the Australian tour and yet the chief executive of English cricket decides there is no need to make any changes. Where is the accountability?” Geoffrey Boycott wrote in the Telegraph.
