For a nation with long-standing tournament heritage, Uruguay have not yet been able to return to their glory days at the FIFA men’s World Cup.

The South Americans won the first edition in 1930 as back-to-back Olympic football champions, but since their 1950 world title, they have fallen thrice at the semi-final stage.

Marcelo Bielsa will lead them to North America, having coached his native Argentina to the Olympic gold at Athens 2004.

La Celeste have been drawn into Group J with European champions Spain, tournament debutants Cabo Verde and three-time Asian Cup winners Saudi Arabia.

Here is what you need to know about Uruguay.

Who are the big stars missing from the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Who are Uruguay’s stars to watch at the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

Federico Valverde is Uruguay’s engine across every blade of grass and the key man for their World Cup campaign. The two-time UEFA Champions League winner with Real Madrid brings vital versatility with the ability to play on the right flank and in defence.

Manchester United man Manuel Ugarte adds extra midfield support alongside Valverde, as he looks to earn his first World Cup minutes. The Uruguayan backline revolves around captain José María Giménez, who sits on the verge of 100 international caps.

Bielsa’s squad leans into more senior players, but that does not mean Uruguay are short of young talent. Facundo Pellestri has only missed 22 per cent of international matches since he made his debut aged 20 and could bring an extra edge in attack.
