Man Utd starlet Diego Leon shares dream after making Paraguay debut, ‘my big goal is…’

Diego Leon became the first Manchester United player to represent Paraguay on the international stage during the October international break.

Although Diego Leon has yet to be given his Manchester United debut by Ruben Amorim, who brought him to the club in the summer, the youngster reached a proud milestone in his first three months.

Leon was one of 18 United players called up for international duty in October. It was his first call-up to the senior Paraguay side.

In Paraguay’s 2-0 defeat to South Korea, Leon made his debut after coming off the bench in the latter stages of the match.

United have monitored Leon’s progress closely, and he already has big aims for the immediate future after getting a taste of senior international football.

Diego Leon reveals World Cup dream

Leon has been limited to minutes in United’s Under-21 team this season.

The left wing-back will be tasked with settling into English football by playing with the youth teams before being given a debut in the first-team.

Aged 18, Leon has plenty of time on his side to develop into a first-team player at Old Trafford. There’s no denying right now that he is a hot prospect for the future after becoming a senior international.

In an interview with 1080 AM, as cited by Versus, Leon claims he can’t relax now that he is living a dream career as a United player.

Leon talked about the fears he had moving to Manchester at such a young age, but he is happy with how he has adapted to everything thus far.

“When they told me about coming to England, I was scared – about the language and other things – but luckily I’ve adapted now. My big goal is to go to the World Cup,” Leon said.

“I was incredibly happy to be called up to the national team. It’s hard to fathom everything that’s happened to me in these past two years. I only wanted to play for Cerro Reserve, but God had better plans for me.”

The sky is the limit for Leon as he looks to develop into a world-class left wing-back. It would be a remarkable achievement if he made the Paraguay squad for the 2026 World Cup, and it would give United greater representation at the 48-nation tournament.

Diego Leon appears in EFL trophy defeat

A week after making his Paraguay debut, Leon made his second appearance for the U21s as United lost 5-2 against Barnsley in the EFL Trophy group stage.

Leon played 45 minutes in a Premier League 2 outing at Liverpool a month ago, but he lasted over an hour on the pitch against Barnsley.

United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, was in the stands to keep an eye on Leon and other impressive youngsters on the pitch, including Yuel Helafu.

The result was a bad one, but United will be happy with Leon’s display on the night.
