MLS fined Lionel Messi an undisclosed amount following a physical altercation with Philadelphia Union's Quinn Sullivan during a heated match

The incident occurred in the 101st minute of Inter Miami's 2-2 draw against Philadelphia Union on August 19, 2026

Messi escaped a suspension and remained eligible to play despite the retroactive disciplinary ruling

Major League Soccer has handed Lionel Messi a fine after the Inter Miami forward struck Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan on the back of the head during a fiery match at Subaru Park on August 19, 2026.

The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced the retroactive sanction on August 21, 2026, confirming Messi had violated league rules governing contact involving the hands to an opponent's face, head, or neck area.

The league did not disclose the financial penalty.

Why did Messi strike his opponent?

The flashpoint came in the 101st minute of a match that had grown increasingly tense in its closing stages.

Messi, believing Sullivan had elbowed him after he had already released the ball, confronted the midfielder near the halfway line.

The two exchanged words before Messi delivered an open-handed strike to the back of Sullivan's head and neck area.

Referee Filip Dujic stepped in to separate the pair, and play resumed without any on-field sanction against Messi.

Despite the seriousness of the act, the committee stopped short of issuing a suspension, meaning Messi remained eligible for selection.

Messi was not the only player to face disciplinary consequences from the night.

Inter Miami defender Ian Fray was also fined an undisclosed amount after grabbing Sullivan by the neck during a separate confrontation inside the penalty area.

Philadelphia Union's Yannick Bright received a red card following the stoppage-time disorder. Cavan Sullivan, the 16-year-old younger brother of Quinn Sullivan, was also sent off, though an independent review panel subsequently overturned his one-game suspension.

The match itself finished 2-2, a result that carried added emotional weight for Messi, who scored Inter Miami's second goal. It was his first goal since the death of his father, Jorge Messi.

This is reportedly the second time Messi has faced formal disciplinary action from MLS since joining the league.

In February 2025, he was sanctioned after grabbing the neck of a New York City FC assistant coach during a match, drawing comparisons with the latest incident given the nature of the physical contact involved.
