Zeynep Sonmez advances to US Open women's doubles second round

Sonmez and Maria defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova and Talia Gibson 6-3, 7-6 in the first round of the women's doubles draw at the U.S. Open in New York, winning in straight sets.

The pair advances to face third-seeded Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic in the second round.

Career-high ranking and season form

Sonmez, ranked number 52 in singles, holds a career-high singles ranking of world number 48, the highest ever reached by a Turkish player in WTA history.

Her run with Maria marks her first appearance in the women's doubles main draw at the US Open.

The pair previously advanced to the second round together at Wimbledon in 2025 and reached the second round at the French Open earlier in 2026.

Maria, ranked number 83 in singles and a former doubles world number 54, partners with Sonmez on the WTA Tour this season.
