Carlton winger signs new deal amid interest from rival as veteran pair extend

Carlton's Ollie Hollands has locked himself away at Ikon Park until the end of 2029 despite heavy interest from North Melbourne.

Joining Hollands is veteran defensive duo Nic Newman and Nick Haynes, who both signed one-year deals.

Hollands had met with the Kangaroos in recent weeks as the Arden Street club pursued his signature.

To the Blues' delight, the former first-round selection penned a new deal after earning his spot in the senior side under Josh Fraser.

“Ollie has an outstanding work ethic. He's the type of player who leaves it all out on the field, every single week. To see him extend for another three years confirms his commitment to our football club,” GM of Football Chris Davies said.

“We believe Ollie has future growth and we are excited to see how that develops across the next few seasons.”

Hollands' future was uncertain, and he even discussed the topic following a VFL game in August.

"Obviously a busy week, but I just want to continue playing good footy for the rest of the year," Hollands said on Fox Footy's VFL broadcast.

"And then let all that stuff unfold in the back end of the year."

Hollands had his smallest return in AFL matches this year, playing a measly 14 games, which was mostly under Michael Voss.

But strong form in the reserves warranted a recall in the final round of the home-and-away season, whilst impressive performances in the Wildcard Round and elimination finals furthered Carlton's desire to keep him in the navy blue.

Haynes and Newman's new deals lock away defensive depth to the Blues.

The pair have played pivotal roles for Carlton in the backline, and will have a strong say in 2027.

“Nic's return to the game this year has been noticeable, with the team playing some of its best football with him in the side. In his 15th AFL season, Nick has been a constant and reliable defender, with his commitment to every contest on game day applauded," Davies said.

“We believe both can still contribute strongly at AFL level on the field, whilst off the field, both players are always willing to help our younger defenders develop. It is their selfless, club-first mindset that will be central in taking our football club forward.”

Carlton is yet to confirm contract calls on project talls Hudson O'Keeffe and Flynn Riley.

The Blues have farewelled Zac Williams, Jordan Boyd, Lachie Fogarty, Lewis Young, Elijah Hollands, Flynn Young and Harry Charleson, as well as the Camporeale twins.
