Under normal circumstances, taking a two-week break in the last month of your season would not be something that a league or its fans would celebrate. But this WNBA season is as far away from normal circumstances as a sports league can be.Throughout the last six weeks, the WNBA has been in the crosshairs of the culture wars, thanks to Sophie Cunningham speaking out against transgender athletes in an ESPN feature profile. Those comments were like a drop of blood in the water for political firebrands and grifters to come out of the woodwork and make the WNBA their main obsession. The WNBA became a favorite talking point of Fox News, as the controversy was catnip for right-wing commentators. As the summer wore on, the situation got more and more absurd. Women’s basketball became a toxic scene. It seemed to reach a breaking point when former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom was kicked out of a game after a confrontation with Natasha Cloud of the Chicago Sky. Kanter and failed Republican political candidate Royce White have both derisively claimed interest in declaring for the 2027 WNBA Draft in an effort to demean transgender athletes and latch on to the news cycle. But now, the WNBA is taking a break. And it couldn’t come at a better time for a reset. After four games were played on Sunday, August 30, the league won’t resume play until Thursday, September 17. At that point, there will only be eight days left in the regular season before the playoffs begin. The unusual break is due to the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, and the WNBA releasing players to be eligible for the event. Outside of the Olympics, it’s the biggest and most prestigious international women’s basketball tournament.Naturally, Team USA are heavy odds-on favorites to win the tournament, having won the last four editions of the World Cup. And the roster is absolutely stacked with the league’s biggest stars. Seeing Caitlin Clark, Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese all on the same team is going to be incredible. A total of 51 WNBA players will be competing.Seeing all of these players unite under the Team USA banner is the best medicine for the manufactured divisiveness that has come for the WNBA this year. The rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese is always a focal point for fanbases to engage in tribal combat. Seeing them playing on the same team will hopefully provide encouragement that there is room for both to be supported.Much like we’ve seen at the Olympics and the World Cup, Team USA can be an incredible force for good when it comes to drawing viewers, making fans feel good, and uniting the masses. Of course, it’s also a great opportunity to be corrupted by political forces as well, just as anything can be in 2026. But at least it should provide a clean break from the total insanity that has been unleashed upon the WNBA this summer. As the transgender athlete debate has raged, it provides a respite to finally move on. Royce White and Riley Gaines attended a recent Indiana Fever game and received little attention and fanfare outside of right-wing publications, potentially showing that the story was finally running out of steam. With the WNBA now on more than a two-week break and the NFL and college football seasons finally underway, it provides an opportunity for those voices who suddenly started caring about the WNBA because it was politically convenient to find something else to do with their time. And when the league does return to play following the World Cup, it provides a great opportunity to get the focus where it belongs: the basketball. In spite of all the drama that has encircled the league, the WNBA is still seeing massive ratings almost everywhere, thanks to Caitlin Clark and a generation of new stars.Yes, it will be a significant challenge for the WNBA to match those ratings once football season begins and competition increases dramatically. But given everything the league has been through this summer, it might just be worth the tradeoff. There are so many great stories awaiting that a final playoff push and the postseason that follows could be ripe for more ratings records.Clark and the Fever have a legitimate chance to make a deep playoff run. A’ja Wilson and the Aces are looking strong. Reese and the Dream will provide a formidable challenge. Bueckers will be making her first playoff appearance with the Wings. And it may finally be the Lynx’s year, with Olivia Miles set to get the nationwide recognition that she deserves. These are all things that the WNBA and actual fans of the sport would love to shine a light upon. Hopefully, after the World Cup is over, they will finally get a chance to do so.
