PSG boss Luis Enrique makes bizarre 'childbirth' analogy for Girona win

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique made a bizarre analogy as he compared the win against Girona in the UEFA Champions League on September 18, Wednesday to be as painful as child birth. PSG managed to secure a 1-0 win after Girona’s goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga, who had impressively denied numerous attempts from the French side, made a critical mistake in the closing minutes, handing the hosts the victory.

Speaking after the win, as quoted by Reuters, Enrique said that PSG were superior on the night but Girona made them play in circles. The PSG boss revealed that he had told his counterpart Michel that it was a very difficult match for them in the end.

"I think we were superior, but Girona played us in circles and made us dizzy. At halftime, we said that if we didn't press, we were going to suffer. We had to win, and it was very difficult," Luis Enrique told Movistar Plus.

"It was very difficult. I told (Girona manager) Michel that this was worse than giving birth, with all due respect."

With the Champions League now operating under a revised format, each team plays eight games against different opponents. The top eight teams from the 36-club league advance directly to the Round of 16, while the next 16 teams face an additional knockout round to qualify.

Enrique acknowledged that this new structure introduces an element of unpredictability regarding how each result may impact the overall standings.

"Winning a match or any title is difficult, but we don’t know the dimension of this competition with this format," he said.

"We are going to have to play matches against teams that have easier schedules than ours. How many points are we going to need? There are many unknowns that need to be cleared up."

PSG's win did come at a cost as they had Marco Asensio limp off at half-time. However, Enrique showed his confidence in the strength of his squad.

"He felt a twinge. Marco had started the season well. This is professional football, and we have a very good squad," said Enrique.

PSG's next challenge will be an away fixture against Reims in Ligue 1, set for Saturday, September 21.
