Football: Chelsea captain Millie Bright announces retirement after glittering career

Millie Bright, Chelsea's longest-serving player and former England international, has announced her retirement from football, aged 32.

Bright decided to end her playing career on Wednesday (29 April), announcing her decision via a video on Chelsea's social media accounts.

The centre-back, who competed at Tokyo 2020 with Great Britain, departs from Chelsea as the west London club's record appearance maker with 314 matches.

She spent 12 years at Stamford Bridge, capping a glittering career that saw her win 20 trophies, including eight Women's Super League (WSL) titles.

"I think, in life, we have to make decisions. And in football, we're always given the answers, like we're always told where to be, what to eat, what time to come to training," a teary-eyed Bright said in a video message.

"And I think I'm at a stage where I am ready to take control of my life... no one can tell you what's right in this moment or when the time is right, but for me, I'm ready to hang up my boots.

"I'm not going anywhere. Don't panic. There's more to come," she added.

Bright's retirement caps a remarkable journey that began when she signed by Chelsea from Doncaster Belles in 2015.

She went on to set the record for most WSL appearances with 216, surpassing Jordan Nobbs' previous mark of 210 in November.

What's next for Millie Bright after retirement?

Chelsea said in a statement that Bright will continue her association with the Blues, becoming a club ambassador and trustee of the Chelsea Foundation.

"I'm Chelsea through and through," said the 32-year-old, who served as Chelsea's captain for the last three seasons.

"I always said I will retire at this club... I've given everything on and off the pitch for the badge and I'm so proud to have done that for over a decade now.

"I've been playing injured for the last six years and I'm tired.

"I'm ready to venture off into life, and to do bigger things with the club and to still be a part of that is really, really special to me."

Bright had already stepped away from international football in October 2025, calling time on her Lionesses career, which saw her make 88 senior caps and win the Women's UEFA Euro 2022. She also led the team to the final of the FIFA Women's World Cup the following year.
