Deion Sanders opens up on NFL coaching rumors

Deion Sanders says he’s happy at Colorado as rumors swirl that Coach Prime could be on the Cowboys’ shortlist if the team moves on from Mike McCarthy.

Sanders has been pushed as a possibility for the potential opening by former Cowboys great Michael Irvin, among others, but the Colorado coach did his best to try and tamper down that chatter.

“I’m happy where I am, man,” Sanders told reporters on Tuesday. “I’ve got a kickstand down. You know what a kickstand is? … That means I’m resting. I’m good, I’m happy, I’m excited. I’m enthusiastic about where I am. I love it here, truly do.”

The NFL great — and former Cowboys defensive back — seemed to jokingly admonish the question with Colorado athletic director Rick George at the podium with him.

“You going to talk like that with my AD in here, that’s so disrespectful,” Sanders said. “You going to talk about me going somewhere with my AD in here?”

Sanders has transformed the Colorado football program into a Big 12 powerhouse in his second year at the helm.

The program is 8-2 this season with only one to a conference opponent — a 31-28 loss to Kansas State on Oct. 12.

Sanders took over the program in late 2022 when he signed a five-year, $29.5 million contract to come in and turn around the team that went 1-11 that year.

The Buffaloes are now two wins from securing a spot in the Big 12 title game.

They’ve been led by receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who also happens to be the head coach’s son.

Colorado will face Kansas on the road this upcoming weekend and then host Oklahoma State on Nov. 29 in their final two games of the season.
