Gary Lineker has told Micah Richards that one Manchester United fan who has been a “season ticket holder forever” painted an incredibly interesting picture for him.

The optimism around the 2025-26 Premier League season for Manchester United has waned after a turbulent run of results for the Red Devils under Ruben Amorim.

United lost 1-0 to rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford in their Premier League opener, but the Red Devils did put on a strong attacking display and overall performance.

However, Ruben Amorim watched on from the Craven Cottage dugout as United’s display against Fulham in the 1-1 Premier League draw left much to be desired.

United impressed against Fulham in the first half of last Sunday’s clash, but the Red Devils struggled to break the deadlock and Bruno Fernandes even missed a penalty.

The Red Devils took the lead in the second half against Fulham, but United were unable to maintain their advantage and had to settle for a point last weekend.

Following the Arsenal defeat and Fulham draw, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was left red-faced after Wednesday’s humiliating defeat to Grimsby Town.

League Two side Grimsby Town beat United on penalties in the second round of the Carabao Cup at Blundell Park and the Red Devils crashed out of the competition.

Gary Lineker said that he went to watch the Red Devils’ draw against Fulham and one of his friends, who is a United fan, also attended the match at Craven Cottage.

The ex-Match of the Day presenter opened up on the sarcastic – and brutal – verdict that his United-supporting friend told him over a text message about the result.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker said: “A friend of mine who I went to the Fulham game with, ‘JD,’ is a big, big Manchester United fan, [has] been a season ticket holder forever.

“And he came with me. He said, and this is a little bit, I think how Man United fans are at the moment, they sort of just… I don’t think there’s much hope or aspiration.

“And he sent me a text saying, something along the lines of, ‘After that superb point at Fulham, we’re not only five points off from the top of the table.’”

Gary Lineker uses his Man Utd-supporting friend’s text message to tell Micah Richards the ethos of Red Devils supporters

The Red Devils are 16th in the Premier League table after United’s defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford earlier this month and the draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Lineker suggested to Micah Richards that there is a sense of “defeatism” from United fans around the state of the Premier League club amid the 2025-26 season.

“So, […] there does seem an aura of almost defeatism around Manchester United at present and that needs to change,” he told his Rest Is Football co-host.

“But as we all know, as we all know, it’s generally the coach that suffers.”

Following the humiliating defeat in the Carabao Cup to Grimsby Town, United will return to Premier League action on Saturday against Burnley at Old Trafford.
