“Didn’t see it coming”: Lyon surprised by Viney’s Dees exit meeting

Lyon, who played with Viney's dad Todd at the Dees, says it is a bit of a shock to hear that the premiership midfielder and vice-captain is in this position, but acknowledges the harsh reality of modern day footy.

“Jack Viney has been a magnificent servant for this football club over a long period of time. He's a two-time best and fairest, he’s finished runner-up three times and third two times. So that's seven times he's been in the top three in the best and fairest.

“It is a long stint, 14 years, and his body's starting to be a challenge. He had multiple injuries through the course of it.

“He's been an outstanding servant, but I guess that's the aggressive nature of where footy is at right now. They contracted him - and this is the nature of footy too - if you're going to contract someone for a long term, you'd think that that gives them security. It doesn't.

“They'll probably be prepared to offload that contract and pay some of it, I'd imagine, if they could get it off their books. But that's just where footy goes these days.

“What I am thankful of is they haven't bull-dusted him. They've looked him in the eye and said, ‘No, this is where it's at’.”

“But that's just footy and I hate the fact that he may finish his career somewhere else, but that's just me being romantic,” he added.

“I loved every minute that he's played. But I get it, I understand where the game's at.”

“If he can't do a deal, if there's no suitor out there for him, then he would go back and be as hard as ever, but it'd be awkward I reckon,” Lyon continued.

“It's the mix that you have available in your own midfield, like you don't want too many of a Viney kind, but if you slotted him into some of the weaker, less physical midfields and what else he brings,” said Watson.

“I think of, say, even Essendon. I think he would be good at Essendon because of the way he plays, the way he prepares, his attitude towards the game.”

Watson: “And therein lies the other problem. Where he goes and the mix, do you have to build the mix around him or does he have to slot into the mix that you've already got.

“He’s not a great kick, he's never been a great kick, but he's never been anything but a 10 out of 10 in terms of desire to go and want to win the ball and compete.”

Lyon: “Yeah, if you want a competitor in a standard setter, then there's few better. Uncompromising, demanding, pretty confrontational, hit you right between the eyes, not really going to worry too much about your feelings.

“It wasn’t a comfortable meeting by any stretch of the imagination, in fact it was pretty uncomfortable, but it was courteous,” he said further.

“Jack did say to Melbourne that ‘I don’t want to train my you know what off and not be rewarded here’. And they told him, ‘If you want to explore you’ve got our blessing to do so. Harvey Langford has played on a wing but we need to get him inside, we need games into Koltyn Tholstrup, Caleb Windsor, we need to fast-track our next batch of midfielders’.
