India breeze past Bangladesh by 7 wickets in 2nd Test, clean sweep series 2-0

Chasing a measly total of 95 with two whole sessions of play remaining on Day 5, India managed to win the 2nd Test by seven wickets to clinch the series 2-0.

With Bangladesh still having eight wickets intact at the start of Day 5, trailing by a mere 26 runs, India curbed the visitors at 146 in the first session of the final day. Chasing 95, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his second consecutive half-century as India wrapped up the game inside 17.2 overs.

With two full sessions of play remaining, and a small total to defend, Bangladesh did manage to snap three wickets – removing Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Jaiswal – but were unable to produce a miracle defence as India maintained their impressive home record in the longest format.

Bangladesh resumed their second innings at 26/2 on Day 5, still trailing by as many runs. It didn’t take long for the Indian bowlers to put the visitors under further pressure with Ravichandran Ashwin claiming the wicket of Mominul Haque in his second over of the day.

Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam the combined alongside skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto for a 55-run stand for the fifth wicket, scoring his half-century.

The duo however, were dismissed in quick succession with Jadeja first cleaning up Shanto followed by Akash Deep bagging Shadman.

From thereon, Mushfiqur Rahim (37) was the constant feature of the Bangladesh innings as wickets kept falling at the other end. The Bangladesh veteran was eventually dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah on the last ball before Lunch. Bumrah finished with three wickets in the innings, same as Jadeja and Ashwin.

On Day 4, a total of 18 wickets fell as India quickly ran through the Bangladesh batting, before racing their way to 285/9 and declaring the innings in what was a display of ultra-aggressive cricket from Rohit Sharma and Co in a rain-marred Test match.

After India put Bangladesh in to bat first and bowled 35 overs on Day 1, the game was on a pause for two-and-a-half days owing to rain and wet outfield.
