Gary Neville shares Man Utd theory that hints at 'something wrong' in dressing room

Concerned Gary Neville has claimed that Christian Eriksen's admission following Manchester United's draw against Twente last week pointed to a squad that is not entirely committed

Gary Neville thinks comments made by Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen last week offered cleared proof that “something is going wrong” in the dressing room at Old Trafford.

And former defender Neville, who described Sunday’s defeat against Tottenham as “disgusting”, reckons alarm bells should be ringing when a senior player such as Denmark star Eriksen admits the team did not show sufficient desire against opponents who simply “wanted it more.”

Eriksen’s comments came after the shock draw against Dutch minnows Twente in the Europa League with Erik ten Hag’s side then following that up with a listless performance versus Spurs.

And speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville said: “It was a disgusting performance, I think that is the word I used at the end.

“But do you know something? All the words I've used - you might see headlines around, 'Neville calls Manchester United disgusting' - I think back to Christian Eriksen's comments after the game on Wednesday night.

“From someone who is around the dressing room, someone who is a very senior player who should be trusted, he has had a long successful career, when he says they didn't want it and don't want it as much as another team in a game of football, that matters more than anything anyone else can say, because he is inside there, he is seeing it with his own eyes.

“We know what's happening in there can't be great because it transmits onto the pitch. The old adage of what happens in training translates onto the pitch is very true. The detail of everything has to be absolutely perfect.

“There is no doubt that something is going wrong in that United dressing room.”

Ten Hag remains safe in his job as head coach for now with reports suggesting that United may revisit the situation if they fail to win their two games before the international break - a Europa League trip away to Porto followed by a league clash at Aston Villa.

But Ten Hag insisted after their latest disappointment, which leaves United 12th in the table with a goal difference of minus three, that he does not fear being sacked and believes he just needs more time to get it right.

“No, I'm not thinking about this,” said Ten Hag. “We are all on one page or in one boat together - the ownership, the staff, the players as well. So I don’t have that concern [the sack].

“We all made togetherness in this decision to stay together, as an ownership and as a leadership group.

“In the summer we also made the decision, from a clear review, on what we have to improve and how we want to construct a squad.

“But we knew it would take some time, with how the window went and the fact some players came in late, like Manuel Ugarte. We also have to make some improvement in organisation, we have had some injuries and we need some time.”
