England star handcuffed, detained by cops as Stokes watches on in fresh nightclub fiasco

England fast bowler Brydon Carse was taken away in handcuffs by police outside a nightclub as a new late night, drinking incident embarrasses English cricket.

In a video that has spread and wide on social media, a handcuffed Carse is surrounded by four police officers outside an Irish pub in Derby with former England captain Ben Stokes spotted in the background.

England seamer and Carse and Stokes’ Durham teammate Matthew Potts is also seen trying to talk to the 31-year-old, who played all five Ashes Tests in Australia last summer.

The Telegraph reported that Carse is “understood to have been briefly detained by police at the scene, but not arrested”.

“It is unclear exactly what led the police to place him in handcuffs outside the busy nightspot, but Telegraph Sport has been told a drink was split on Carse, leading to an exchange of words,” The Telegraph’s deputy cricket correspondent Will Macpherson added.

“The police were not called, but were already outside the club, which said on social that it shut at 4am on Sunday morning.”

Carse is in the England squad for the current series against Pakistan, but has been unsighted at Test level during the English summer due to injury.

He was not with the England squad at the time, but with his county side Durham and members of the team had gone out to celebrate a win in Derby.

Carse had not done his Test case any favours against Derbyshire with just two wickets for the match, while Stokes dominated take five wickets in the second innings.

Carse is set to join the England squad in London on Monday ahead of the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s starting Thursday.

Returning England captain Joe Root abolished the team’s midnight curfew that was in the spotlight after a nightclub incident involving Stokes and Gus Atkinson after they defeated New Zealand at Lord’s in June.

The pair were stood down for the next Test at the Oval and then Stokes retired during his return at Trent Bridge.

England players’ behaviour on nights out has also come under scrutiny in the past year with Test vice-captain and white-ball skipper Harry Brook being punched by a bouncer the night before an ODI in New Zealand last year.

While the England team’s drinking faced intense backlash during their mid-tour trip to Noosa in Australia.

It is also not the first time Carse’s off field behaviour has made the news.

In 2024, he was suspended for three times by the Cricket Regular for placing more than 300 bets on cricket matches earlier in his career.

He was also disciplined for off-field behaviour on a white-ball tour of the West Indies three years ago.
