Who is Claire Liu, Alex Eala's first opponent at Guangzhou Open 2025?

Alex Eala is swinging back in action as she takes on another WTA 250 challenge at the 2025 Guangzhou Open on Tuesday.

The Filipina tennis sensation is set to face Claire Liu of the United States for the first time in her career, with their Round of 32 clash scheduled at 4:10 p.m. in China.

The 25-year-old Liu is currently ranked no. 305, but reached a career-high no. 52 rank back in January 2023, the same year she saw action in several Grand Slam events like the US Open, Roland Garros, and Australian Open.

Liu has yet to capture a WTA singles title, with her closest run coming at the 2022 Rabat Grand Prix, where she settled for a runner-up finish after falling to Italy’s Martina Trevisan in the final.

In the recent Japan Open, where Eala fell short in the Round of 32, Liu also competed but exited following a first-round loss in the qualifying phase. She sustained a 2-6, 2-6 loss to third-seeded and compatriot Caty Mcnally of the USA.
