Dean named England captain for Ireland ODIs

Charlie Dean will captain England in their three-match ODI series against Ireland in September, with the all-rounder handed another opportunity to lead the side. Dean took charge during England's ODI series against New Zealand when Nat Sciver-Brunt was unavailable through injury, and will now oversee the side in Ireland.

England have opted to leave out several established names for the series. Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt-Hodge are managing their fitness and recovery, while Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell and Amy Jones have not been picked. The absences give a number of players an opportunity to stake a claim in the ODI set-up.

Alice Capsey, England's reserve wicketkeeper at the recent T20 World Cup, is set to take the gloves in Jones' absence. Grace Potts and Kira Chathli are the two players without an international cap in the squad, having both been around the England set-up during the summer. Charis Pavely, who has played two T20Is, is in line to make her first ODI appearance.

England squad: Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey (wk), Kira Chathli, Tilly Corteen-Coleman, Charlie Dean (c), Sophia Dunkley, Lauren Filer, Dani Gibson, Jodi Grewcock, Freya Kemp, Ryana MacDonald-Gay, Charis Pavely, Grace Potts, Mady Villiers, Issy Wong.

Ryana MacDonald-Gay has also been recalled after overcoming the lower-back problem that kept her out last year. The Surrey player has enjoyed a productive season for both her county and Manchester Super Giants. Tilly Corteen-Coleman, is also part of the squad, with the left-arm spinner looking to add to her two ODI caps, both of which came against New Zealand.

Head coach Charlotte Edwards said the series would allow England to shift their attention back to the longer limited-overs format following a year heavily centred on T20 cricket. "The focus has rightly been on T20 cricket for much of this year, but with a memorable run to the ICC Women's T20 World Cup final now behind us, this is a chance for players to display their 50-over skills and bank some valuable experience for the future," said Edwards.

"We have got plenty of exciting and talented cricketers in our game and this is an opportunity for some of them to push themselves further forward by hopefully contributing to England victories and putting pressure on future selection," the England coach added.

The opening ODI will be played on September 1 in Leicester, followed by the second ODI in Derby on September 3. The third and final ODI will be held in Worcester on September 6.
