Ghana captain Mensah takes responsibility for Gambia defeat

Ghana national football team captain Gideon Mensah took responsibility for the team’s 2–4 defeat to Gambia in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Accra. The left-back led the Ghana national team onto the pitch at Accra Sports Stadium.

As MyJoyOnline reports, Mensah said it was a day when nothing worked for the team and that, as captain, he also takes responsibility for the defeat.

Incidents involving the captain

According to the outlet, Mensah committed a foul that resulted in a penalty being awarded to Gambia. This incident helped the opponents begin their comeback. In addition, the defender lost the ball in the attack that preceded the Gambian national team’s third goal.

The captain called for consideration of the circumstances surrounding Ghana’s current squad. According to him, after several players declined call-ups, many new footballers joined the team and need time to adapt.

Qualifying situation

Mensah also expressed gratitude to the players who accepted the call-up to the national team and arrived to represent the country despite the squad situation. After the first two matches in Group C, Ghana have no points: they previously lost 0–2 to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké.

Ghana need to recover to retain their chances of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
