Pakistan reach Asian Games women’s cricket semi-finals - Dawn

Pakistan’s women’s cricket team defeated Thailand by three wickets in the Asian Games quarter-finals in Nisshin, Japan, advancing to the tournament’s semi-finals. Rain reduced the match to 11 overs: Thailand scored 91 runs, and Pakistan reached the target with two balls remaining, Dawn reports.

Thailand score 91 runs

The Thailand team began their innings actively and scored 41 runs in the powerplay. Nannapat Koncharoenkai scored 49 runs from 38 balls, falling one run short of a half-century. She formed a 65-run partnership with Fanita Maya.

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana was the first to dismiss Nattakan Chantam, who scored six runs. At the end of the shortened innings, Sana also dismissed Koncharoenkai, finishing her spell with two wickets for 22 runs in three overs. Nannapat Chaiwai hit Nashra Sandhu for a six and a four before being dismissed.

A difficult spell in the chase

Pakistan openers Shawaal Zulfiqar and Gull Feroza gave their team a quick start. Zulfiqar scored 25 runs from 14 balls, including a six in the second over. After her dismissal, Thailand took four wickets in 13 balls, leaving Pakistan in a difficult position.

Ayesha Zafar was dismissed almost immediately after coming to the crease, while Gull Feroza was stumped by wicketkeeper Nannapat Koncharoenkai. After Aliya Riaz was dismissed, Pakistan’s score stood at 47 for four. In the seventh over, the Thai cricketers allowed their opponents to score only one run.

Fatima Sana seized the initiative, scoring 21 runs from 13 balls: in the ninth over, she hit three fours and a six. After she was dismissed at 76 for seven, Tuba Hassan hit a six and a four. Umm-e-Hani and Eman Nasir guided Pakistan to victory in the final over.

Both semi-finals will take place on 20 September at the same venue. Pakistan will play the winners of the quarter-final between Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
