Saint Patrick’s Day might have come and gone in the United States of America, but Great Britain’s Francesca Jones probably still felt the need to pitch herself upon leaving the grandstand court at tennis’ 2026 Miami Open on Thursday (19 March).

In a little under two hours – one hour and 51 minutes to be exact – the unseeded 25-year-old had seen off a spirited challenge from seven-time Grand Slam champion and tournament wildcard Venus Williams, winning their first round encounter in straight sets 7-5, 7-5.

It was a moment of pure bliss for the star-struck Brit, who eschewed the common trappings of elite tennis celebrations to honour the effort and dedication of her childhood idol, bowing to the “legend” on the other side of the net.

“If it weren’t for those two women (Venus and Serena Williams), I’m not sure I would have made the step to do it. ... They’re the reason that I’m here today,” admitted a jubilant Jones, addressing the crowd during an on-court interview after the match.

Born with the genetic condition ectrodactyly ectodermal dysplasia, the World No. 93 plays with three fingers and thumb on each hand. The condition has required frequent surgeries, but has yet to stop her from leaving her mark on women’s tennis.

Returning to the play after an injury at the 2026 Australian Open, Jones broke Williams’ serve on five occasions in their first round match, coming back from a 4-5 deficit in both sets to score a well-earned victory in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

“I’ve had a really rough year so far,” stated Jones. “A lot of injuries and I’m still sick. I was coughing all the time. I was worried I was going to make a legend sick as well.”

While the match ended with another close loss for the U.S. star – whose return to the court has generated a lot of buzz amongst fans and pundits – Williams kept her head held high as she accepted another round of applause from the tennis faithful on hand.
