There is a British champion at the US Open as Mika Stojsavljevic won the girls singles title.

The 15-year-old is the youngest winner since 2006, beating No 7 seed Wakana Sonobe of Japan, and the first British winner of this event since Heather Watson in 2009.

'I'm super happy and super grateful,' said Stojsavljevic. Standing at 6ft tall, with size 10 shoes, Stojsavljevic grew up idolising Maria Sharapova and there are certainly shades of the Russian in her game, with a big serve and effortless power.

Her backhand in particular looks a serious weapon.

Women's national coach Katie O'Brien said: 'The sky's the limit for her. It was exceptional how well she handled the occasion. She has such big weapons. I can't tell you how proud I am.

'Her tennis level has always been there but she has maybe not coped with these occasions so well in the past. Every match that's gone by she's just grown and grown.'

Stojsavljevic was born in Ealing, West London, the daughter of a Serbian-born British dad and a Polish mum.
