Carlos Alcaraz is on the cusp of adding an Olympic gold medal to his already impressive resume - but according to Ash Barty, there's still a long way to go for the Spaniard.

The 21-year-old has already won four grand slam singles titles and after his doubles campaign alongside Rafael Nadal came to an end, Alcaraz will now shift his attention to the quarter finals in the men's singles draw at Paris 2024.

The freakish young gun will take on American Tommy Paul in the quarters on Thursday, with some of the world's best also still in the mix at Roland Garros.

Speaking on Stan Sport's Olympics Daily, the retired Aussie superstar spoke glowingly of Alcaraz's demeanour and believes the doubles defeat could help narrow his focus.

"He has got this incredible charisma - he always looks like he is a six-year-old kid out on court having fun," Barty said.

"He's obviously been on this emotional run as well, playing in his first Olympics at Roland Garros where he's just had so much success.

"He's been playing with Rafael Nadal and now that they're no longer in the tournament he's able to shift his focus completely to singles and just go out there on the singles court and do what he does best.

"What is scary is that he can get so much better. Physically he's incredible and to be so young and so complete as an athlete is remarkable.

"His game of tennis is impressive, but there's so much more for him to learn."

Alcaraz and Paul will meet at 8pm AEST.
