Victoria Mboko made history last week by winning the Canadian Open title.

The 18-year-old star defeated four former Grand Slam champions on her way to the title, coming from a set down against Naomi Osaka in the final to lift the trophy in front of her supporters.

The Canadian prodigy has wowed spectators during her breakout 2025 season. After starting the season ranked 300 in the world, Mboko went on a 22-match win streak, picking up four ITF titles in the process.

Mboko, who is not competing in this week’s Cincinnati Open, will look ahead to the US Open, where she could be a surprise contender.

One famous coach, who often discusses the current affairs of tennis, has weighed in on Victoria Mboko’s ability after her historic victory at the Canadian Open.

Patrick Mouratoglou says Mboko’s number one asset is ‘she has no respect’ for her opponent’s status

Patrick Mouratoglou, who coached tennis legend Serena Williams between 2012 and 2022, has pinpointed Victoria Mboko’s ‘number one asset.’

Mouratoglou says that Mboko has ‘no respect’ for other players. However, he was quick to point out that this doesn’t mean the Canadian is disrespectful, but rather she does not show players too much respect, regardless of their standing in the game.

Speaking on Instagram, Mouratoglou said: “Number one asset of Victoria Mboko, she has no respect.

“It doesn’t mean that she’s disrespectful. It means that she doesn’t look up to players thinking ‘wow! I cannot beat that player. I’m not here yet.’

“No, she plays to win, whoever is on the other side of the court.

“She started this year ranked 300.

“Difficult to think that she’s not going to win Grand Slams. Great physicality, the way she moves on the court, and she’s very offensive.

“Both sides, forehand, backhand, she controls the court and she has this aura. The year before she was playing challengers and she was winning a lot.

“She goes there to win and she does. That’s the biggest message she sends, besides all the other qualities she has.”

Will Victoria Mboko win the US Open?

The question is not whether Victoria Mboko can win the US Open, it is whether she will.

Mboko has showcased her ability to compete, and win against, the greatest WTA players in the game. Her 6-1 6-4 victory over Coco Gauff in Canada demonstrated this fact.

She has also demonstrated an ability to win consistently over a two-week event. The Canadian Open was expanded to a 15-day event this year, with Mboko playing the same amount of matches that she would in a Grand Slam: seven.

Stranger things have happened at the US Open. After all, compatriot Bianca Andreescu stunned the field by winning the US Open at 19-years-old in 2019.

Mboko will be brimming with confidence after winning the Canadian Open, and this will serve her well in the pursuit of her first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.
