Nicky Butt slams Ruben Amorim after Kobbie Mainoo resurgence, 'he was never right…'

Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes have reflected on Ruben Amorim’s decision-making with midfielders like Kobbie Mainoo, stressing how the former Manchester United head coach got things so wrong at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have been given a new lease of life under Michael Carrick.

The win streak extended to four matches when United beat Tottenham 2-0 on Sunday. It was the first time the Red Devils had beaten the north London outfit in nine meetings, thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes.

Although Carrick has made some changes since succeeding Ruben Amorim, following a short stint with Darren Fletcher as caretaker head coach, he has brought the team back to basics by selecting a system that suits them and playing star players in their preferred positions.

Michael Carrick is just another Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with better players: __ % AGREE

Fill in the blank. Is Carrick actually a better coach, or are we falling for the same trap again?

All of this – as well as Carrick’s connection with the team – is contributing to United’s improved run of form. It will be put to the test again on Tuesday night when the squad travels to West Ham in the Premier League.

It remains to be seen whether Carrick will make any changes to the team that got a convincing win over Tottenham, with most players building momentum with each performance in the previous four matches, including wins over the title-chasing duo Man City and Arsenal.

Nicky Butt blames Ruben Amorim for overlooking Kobbie Mainoo in midfield

Kobbie Mainoo did not start a single Premier League match this season until Carrick became head coach.

After being overlooked by Ruben Amorim, Mainoo had to prove himself again when Carrick named him in the line-up for United’s 2-0 win over Man City.

The 20-year-old has built on his performances since then, showing steady progression and running the midfield against Tottenham.

Mainoo has slotted in perfectly alongside Casemiro, but Bruno Fernandes pushed further forward into his favourite role as a No.10.

On the latest episode of The Good, The Bad & The Football, Nicky Butt slams Amorim for overlooking Mainoo and not getting the most out of his midfield options.

“All three of them are flying, they obviously like playing together. Casemiro’s on fire, at his age. He’s been unbelievable the last three or four weeks. He’s got Kobbie next to him and Bruno in front of them.

“I don’t understand how someone can get that so wrong.

“He was never right for the club in the first place.”

Prove us wrong… Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes are the best midfield trio in the Premier League

There is not another trio we would swap them for!

Scholes replied and hinted that Mainoo would have left in January if Amorim was still at the club.

“He’s so clever. Him and Bruno Fernandes make your team play football.

“If Ruben Amorim was still here there is a very good chance he would not be a United player, he would have gone in January.”

Kobbie Mainoo must fix record against West Ham

As things stand, Mainoo has lost more games than he’s won against West Ham.

The England international has taken on the Hammers three times in his senior career, winning once and losing twice.

Mainoo has yet to register a goal contribution against the north London outfit.

Hopefully, that changes with a win for the Red Devils on Tuesday night.
