Liverpool 'ready to top up' Arne Slot's salary as sacked manager free to take job

Arne Slot was sacked by Liverpool back in May and he is close to getting his next job in football which is set to save his former club millions

Liverpool are set to continue paying Arne Slot until the end of his agreed contract even if he becomes the new head coach of the Netherlands national team. The 47-year-old had 12 months remaining on his deal at Anfield when he was sacked, but he could be back in management sooner than expected.

Following the departure of Ronald Koeman after the Dutch's premature World Cup exit, Slot quickly became the top candidate to replace him. With a Nations League clash against Germany on the horizon, the Royal Dutch Football Association are looking to appoint a successor quickly.

If they do ultimately decide that Slot is their man, they will not face any obstacles from Liverpool in appointing him. According to De Telegraaf, Liverpool are planning to 'top up' his salary during his first year at the helm of the Dutch to what he would have been entitled to at Anfield which is set to save them millions.

Paying out a compensation package in full upon sacking a manager was usually the route taken but that has now changed to suspending coaches upon dismissal and continue to pay their monthly salaries.

Slot earned just under £7million during his first season but bonuses related to the Premier League title win saw that increase. While there have been examples of managers forfeiting funds owed from a previous job when accepting a new role, Slot will continue being paid by Liverpool but seemingly under favourable terms.

Had Slot been heading to a Premier League rival, it would have likely been a different story as was proven by former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca joining Manchester City.

Slot is expected to become the second former Liverpool manager to head into international management with Jurgen Klopp recently agreeing to replace Julian Nagelsmann as head coach of Germany.

Andoni Iraola has followed Klopp and Slot in taking charge of Liverpool with the 44-year-old holding his first official press conference as head coach on Monday.

Iraola spoke on a number of topics including transfers, his tactics, the squad at his disposal and much more. One of the most intriguing answers was on why he accepts such short contracts with Iraola signing a two-year deal at Anfield.

On that decision, he said: "Two-year deals, coaching, contracts don't matter a lot. I don't want to be in a place because of a contract. I sign year to year, basically. A lot of managers have long contracts but sometimes the club doesn't want it.

"As a player, it's important but as a manager, it's not important. If you are happy, I am happy. I want to stay here a lot more years, it means I have done a good job. I have done it every time like this."

Had that been the length of contract Slot signed back in 2024, Liverpool would not have needed to pay anything in order to part ways with him a few months ago.
