Mustangs Come Up Short Against No. 20 Duke

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU Women's Tennis fell to No. 20 Duke Friday night, falling to the Blue Devils 4-2 in its ACC home opener. The loss put the Mustangs at 7-3 on the season and 1-2 in ACC play in year one under Coach Kelcy McKenna.

Wins on court three and court one lifted SMU to its ninth doubles point win of the season. Sophie Llewellyn and Natalie Stasny earned a commanding 6-1 win on court three to put the Mustangs at an advantage.

Amelie Van Impe and Caroline McGinley earned their second-consecutive top 15 doubles win, defeating the Duke's No. 12-ranked doubles pair on court one, 6-3. Van Impe and McGinley improved to 7-0 in doubles together and 3-0 against ranked pairs. Individually, McGinley moved to 10-0 in doubles this spring. As a team, SMU is 9-1 in doubles points this spring.

Duke took control in singles, winning three straight points on courts six, four and three. No. 66 Sophie Llewellyn got back a point for the Mustangs, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 on court two over No. 118 Liv Hovde.

Down 3-2, the Mustangs needed the final two courts to go their way, but unfortunately, Duke clinched on court five in the third frame.

Amelie Van Impe was one point of a game shy from earning a ranked win, as she led 7-5, 2-6, 5-4 over No. 22 Balus on court one before the match ended unfinished.

The No. 30-ranked Mustangs will next host No. 3 North Carolina on Sunday at 12 pm CT.
