North Course at Monte Rei completes landmark renovation

The North Course at Monte Rei Golf & Country Club is widely considered to be among the finest in both Portugal and Continental Europe, so golfers out there will be excited to hear that the venue has completed its landmark renovation and officially reopened.

The reopening follows the announcement of a major new phase of investment at Monte Rei, including the arrival of a 100-room Nobu hotel, a signature restaurant and branded residences, further strengthening the resort’s position as one of Europe’s leading golf and lifestyle destinations.

The resort’s signature championship layout, which was designed by 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus, relaunched this month following a major six-month upgrade designed to safeguard its long-term legacy and elevate the experience at one of Portugal’s most highly regarded golf destinations.

The new period of investment on the golf course was overseen by Details- Hospitality, Sports, Leisure, and co-CEO Nuno Sepúlveda believes that the work undertaken will not only secure the resort’s future but also protect Monte Rei’s character.

Sepulveda said: "Monte Rei is one of Portugal and European golf’s most iconic venues and is a must-play course for anyone who loves golf. It was already a great design, so it was important that the work undertaken focused on renewing rather than reinventing it to restore the course to its former glory and put it back where it belongs."

The decision to close and undertake a major upgrade of the North Course was taken in April following a detailed assessment of the layout and its supporting infrastructure.

Over the last six months and working closely alongside the Nicklaus Design team, Monte Rei’s greenkeeping team has carried out a landmark renovation programme, covering green reconstruction, bunker upgrades, irrigation and pump station improvements and cart path refurbishment and enhancements to the practice facilities.

In addition, improvements have also been made to the resort’s practice facilities including the practice tee and training technology, alongside quieter and more sustainable maintenance operations supported by modern equipment.

Sepúlveda added: "Monte Rei’s reopening is a flagship moment for Details and is a clear demonstration of what our company does best: taking a venue with genuine pedigree and untapped potential and investing to bring it back to, and beyond, its best. We’re very proud to have this opportunity to develop and safeguard the long-term future of one of the finest courses in Portugal and Europe and can’t wait to showcase it to a new audience of golfers."

Nestled among the picturesque foothills of the Eastern Algarve, Monte Rei is one of Portuguese golf’s most iconic resorts with many people regarding it as the number one golf venue in the Algarve. Away from the fairways, non-golf facilities include high-end dining, 24/7 concierge service, heated swimming pool, gym, tennis courts and children’s play area, while guests can choose from an array of luxury apartments and villas with accommodation to suit all tastes.

"Jack Nicklaus and all of us at Nicklaus Design are extremely pleased with the renovation and restoration of the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Monte Rei. It is a golf course that Jack has always been immensely proud of, and nearly 20 years after its creation, it remains a very special place, reflecting Jack’s design philosophy and legacy," said Dirk Bouts, senior designer at the Nicklaus Design office.

"Closing the golf course for the past season provided the opportunity to undertake a comprehensive renovation and carefully restore many of the elements that have made Monte Rei such a special golf experience. The enlargement of numerous tees, the renovation and restoration of the greens and bunkers, together with the extensive clearing work throughout the property, have made a tremendous difference while ensuring that the integrity and character of Jack’s original design have been preserved.

"The result has brought the golf course back to the exceptional standard and presentation that were originally envisioned. We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved and very much look forward to seeing golfers return to Monte Rei and once again experience this remarkable golf course as Jack originally intended it to be played and enjoyed."

Monte Rei Golf & Country Club is part of the portfolio of assets managed by DETAILS, currently manage 23 hotels, 14 golf courses, a sports centre, an equestrian centre and several dining venues.
