East Bengal FC will look to keep the Indian flag flying high on the continental stage when they face FK Arkadag in the quarter-finals of the AFC Challenge League 2024-25.

The two-legged football fixtures start from Wednesday with EBFC playing hosts for the first leg in Kolkata. The second leg will be played in Arkadag, Turkmenistan on March 12.

Having seen their playoff hopes in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 end recently, this will be the Red and Gold Brigade’s final opportunity to salvage something from the ongoing season.

Coached by Oscar Bruzon, East Bengal qualified for the knockout stages after topping Group A despite starting as underdogs to Lebanese club Nejmeh in the pool.

Arkadag made the top eight after winning Group B ahead of Kuwaiti club Al-Arabi.

Founded just two years back, Arkadag, coached by Wladimir Bayramow, has been a rising force in Turkmenistan football, winning both the domestic leagues and Cup competitions in their two seasons.

Incidentally, East Bengal had lost to Altyn Asyr, another Turkeministani club, in the 2024-25 AFC Champions League Two (ACL Two) playoffs to drop to the AFC Challenge League.

Altyn Asyr had finished runners-up to Arkadag in the Ýokary Liga, Turkmenistan's top-tier football league, in the 2023 season and finished third last year.

If East Bengal makes it past Arkadag, they will also equal their best-ever finish in a continental tournament. EBFC made the semi-finals in AFC Cup 2013.

The third-tier continental football competition for Asian clubs after the AFC Champions League Elite and ACL Two, the AFC Challenge League was known as the President's Cup until the previous season.

Bruzon has named a 26-member squad for the group stage of the AFC Challenge League 2024-25.
