Ryan Giggs shares his verdict on Ruben Amorim, advises Man Utd on how to back help 'charismatic' coach

Ryan Giggs has issued advice to Manchester United chiefs on how they can help Ruben Amorim become a success at Old Trafford.

Unfortunately for Ruben Amorim, there was no ‘new manager bounce’ when he took the Manchester United head coach role in November.

Erik ten Hag had been sacked after a disastrous start to the 2024/25 season, but things never picked up after Amorim’s appointment, and United are currently sitting in the bottom half of the table with five league games remaining.

Of course, the Europa League gives United a chance to salvage the campaign as it would secure a place in the Champions League. That would require Amorim winning his first trophy at United, but first he faces a semi-final tie against Athletic Club.

Meanwhile, United are going to have their worst finish in the campaign in Premier League history. There will be an expectation for better results as early as next season, or else serious questions will be asked.

Ryan Giggs optimistic about Ruben Amorim at Manchester United

The most decorated footballer in English football has had his say on Ruben Amorim.

United legend Ryan Giggs spent his entire playing career at Old Trafford before becoming part of the coaching staff under Louis van Gaal.

Despite poor results domestically, the former Wales manager remains optimistic about Amorim’s chances at United and believes the Portuguese coach needs time, the support of Ineos and assistance identifying the right players to take the club forward.

“The recruitment in the last, and I was part of it, the last 10-12 years has just been not good enough,” said Giggs, who was appearing on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.

“Any business, any football team need that recruitment. You need a bit of luck. You need young, young know, we had young players coming through. So you had a group of young players together with the best players in Britain, you know, the [Eric] Cantona’s coming in, [Andrei] Kanchelskis, [Peter] Schmeichel.

“So you need a bit of luck that you have them young players coming through. Recruitment. Time. I like the manager, I like Amorim.

“I think he’s charismatic, he needs time, he needs a few transfer windows, he needs backing, but also he needs help on what is a United player and what a United player looks like.”

While United are expected to have a busy summer transfer window, Ineos are planning a squad overhaul with several players leaving the club.

Many players face uncertain futures, including Marcus Rashford and Antony.

Manchester United’s remaining Premier League fixtures

With Manchester United mathematically safe from relegation, it looks like Amorim will be rotating his squad for the remaining league matches.

That way, he can keep his key players fresh for the Europa League semi-final and beyond.

Amorim has stressed that he still wants his players to get results in the league since one of his aims is to raise standards at the club.

United’s next league game is an away trip to Bournemouth, but they will have one eye on Thursday’s crucial first leg against Athletic Club.
