Ruben Amorim eyes unhappy Chelsea star in ambitious first Man Utd transfer

New Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is weighing up a move for Chelsea's Christopher Nkunku according to reports.

The Portuguese manager has started work at Old Trafford and the January transfer window is less than two months away. United's recruitment has left a lot to be desired in recent years and several of their summer signings are yet to impress.

Amorim will come in and put his stamp on the squad, likely bringing in a new system and formation, but the New Year presents him with a chance to bring in his own players. He is looking to seize on Nkunku's current situation at Chelsea, where he finds himself out of the starting picture.

Despite joining for more than £50million from RB Leipzig less than 18 months ago the Frenchman is behind Nicolas Jackson in the pecking order. L'Equipe reports that Nkunku has grown frustrated regarding his lack of minutes and the Manchester outfit could pounce.

The 26-year-old endured an injury-hit debut season at Chelsea and Enzo Maresca has made him a squad player thus far. Rival clubs are looking to dangle the prospect of regular football to see if they can tempt Nkunku into pursuing a move elsewhere.

This term he has largely been resigned to appearances in the cup competitions but has managed to notched 10 goals in 17 matches at a rate of one every 69 minutes. He showed himself to be incredible prolific in Germany, scoring 58 times in the two seasons before he joined Chelsea.

United themselves have had a problem in the final third, particularly when Erik ten Hag was in charge. Their fortunes in the final third have improved somewhat with Ruud van Nistelrooy at the helm, but they're still among the Premier League's lowest scorers.

Their frontline options, the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Ramus Hojlund, have struggled to be the prolific striker that the club is seeking. Van Nistelrooy accepted that the Manchester outfit need an out and out goalscorer to compete with Europe's best clubs.

He said: “I agree that when you want to be a successful side in the Premier League and in Europe, which is what the build is all about, you need a certain amount of goals. That is clear. That is why the best teams in the world have those players. At the moment, we have players who get a certain amount of goals and assists but they are in an age where they still need to be developed."
