Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has admitted that Manchester United now face a “risky” Premier League match against Wolves at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils are back in Premier League action on the weekend after Ruben Amorim’s men punched their ticket to the Europa League semi-finals.

Manchester United hosted Lyon on Thursday evening at Old Trafford and the Red Devils staged a dramatic comeback in the second-leg Europa League tie.

Lyon were leading United 4-2 in the second half of extra time before Ruben Amorim’s side fought back and clinched a 5-4 win over the Ligue 1 outfit.

United’s triumph over Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals has ensured that the Red Devils will face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals of the Europa League.

The Red Devils have struggled in their 2024-25 Premier League campaign, but the Europa League remains a shining light for United before the season is out.

The Europa League would secure European football for the Red Devils and a return to the Champions League for the 2025-26 campaign under United manager Amorim.

What Paul Merson had to say about Wolves and Man Utd ahead of the Premier League clash at Old Trafford

Speaking in his Sportskeeda column on Thursday, Paul Merson insisted that Manchester United’s aim should be to focus on their Europa League campaign.

The Red Devils are 14th in the Premier League table under Ruben Amorim and United have only managed 10 wins from 32 matches in their 2024-25 campaign.

United are currently on course for their worst Premier League finish in the table since England’s top-flight league first formed back in 1992.

“Contrary to what we thought after the derby, Manchester United have not really improved,” Merson said.

“I thought they were poor against Newcastle and now face a Wolves, who seem to have turned a corner in recent weeks.

“I’m sure Manchester United will know that the Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon is a bigger game than this one.

“Even if they beat Wolves 10-0 after losing that tie, it still would be a massive disappointment.

“If Manchester United get it right, all it takes them is three games to get back in the Champions League by winning the Europa League – that should be their aim.”

Paul Merson singles out Matheus Cunha amid his Man Utd and Wolves scoreline prediction for the Premier League tie at Old Trafford

Matheus Cunha has been heavily linked with United and the 25-year-old Brazilian forward is believed to be a potential transfer target for the Red Devils.

Merson has said that Matheus Cunha, who is under contract with Wolves until 2029, now has the opportunity to make his “big audition” against United at Old Trafford.

“Wolves will look to play their game wherever they go and that’s why I believe this is a risky game for United,” he continued.

“Matheus Cunha will consider this game a big audition for himself and if he gets going, I think Wolves can hurt the hosts at Old Trafford.”

Merson has tipped United and Wolves to share the Premier League points and the Arsenal hero has backed a 2-2 scoreline for the clash on Sunday afternoon.
