Alex Eala hits season low during defeat to Tatiana Prozorova at the Singapore Tennis Open

Alex Eala lost to Tatiana Prozorova, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, in the second round of the Singapore Tennis Open.

The Filipina led 4-2 in the second set, but she couldn't finish the job against Prozorova, who is ranked 162 places below her. Eala lost to Prozorova in three sets after three hours and 11 minutes of thrilling action in Singapore.

Eala was one of the title favourites in Singapore, entering the competition as the third seed. However, seeding went out the window on Thursday, as the 21-year-old suffered her worst defeat of 2026.

Before losing to Prozorova in Singapore, Eala hadn't lost to a player ranked outside the top 100 this season. She fell to world number 99 Alycia Parks at the Australian Open, but she was unbeaten against players ranked 101st or worse.

In fact, this was her second-worst defeat (by ranking) since the start of the 2025 season. She lost to Claire Liu, the 305th-ranked player on tour, at last year's Guangzhou Open.

Eala was far from her best against the Russian star, struggling on serve throughout her second-round match. She made seven double faults and won just 52% of her first-serve points.

The world number 18 also struggled to hit through Prozorova, as her opponent returned well in the slower indoor conditions. Outdoor hard-courts and grass courts are Eala's best surfaces, and she clearly has work to do to become a genuine challenger indoors.

Why Alex Eala's Singapore Tennis Open exit could help her

Eala's defeat against Prozorova could prove to be a blessing in disguise. The Filipina is next scheduled to appear at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, where she is the gold-medal favourite.

Had Eala made a deep run in Singapore, she might have arrived in Japan fatigued, affecting her chances of winning the Asian Games title for her country. Now, she has a few extra days to rest and recover before the tournament begins on Sunday, September 27.

She won bronze in singles and mixed doubles at the last Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, losing to Qinwen Zheng in the singles semi-finals and to Huang Tsung-hao and Liang En-shuo in the mixed doubles semis.

Whether Eala can go all the way and win gold for her country this year remains to be seen. The Asian Games women's singles gold-medal match will be played on Friday, October 2.
