'I take responsibility'

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick, speaking on Sky Sports: "The start of the game and the end of the game is completely different. It didn't feel like the same game and certainly the same emotions at all. We had the game exactly where we wanted it and let it get away from us in a big way. That's the story of the game.

"There's a number of things we'll look at and dissect. We can't accept that as a group. I take responsibility for it. The performance towards the end of the second half, that's on me. We all have to get better. We have a big game on Sunday that we have to prepare for. We're out of this competition and we've got to get back to winning football matches. It doesn't feel good at the moment but we have to get back to winning football matches and we have to get better.

"We want to win and we want to win quickly. The next match is Sunday and that's all I'm thinking about right now."

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, speaking on Sky Sports: "I think we started the game really well. We conceded two easy goals and then we kept and stuck to our plan. That was a positive thing. Of course, you're 2-0 down, you can go in one direction and say the game is done and not stick to the plan anymore, or you can believe. You have to believe in your teammates. You have to believe in yourself.

"The longer the game went, the better we were and in the end I think we won in a deserved way.

"I didn't think we started that bad. Of course we conceded goals and the goals changed the momentum but overall we had the right structure. We had good patterns. I think the bad thing at the beginning was we were quite nervous. We made a lot of technical mistakes and then afterwards the players grew into the game.

"In the end, we completely controlled the game and we had plenty of chances to score another goal."

On Brighton's second goal:

The two of them [Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro] are really far apart. That's OK, it's the modern game. Your midfield player is there getting pressed, all game he kept giving the ball away.

Now, instead of complaining that he [Heaven] doesn't get the ball, he has to get across and sprint 20 yards to the centre midfield player that's going to score there, Pascal Gross. Instead, he's on his heels, he doesn't anticipate the danger. Leny Yoro does really poorly as well. Look at Ayden Heaven, go, sprint. Get to the penalty spot. Instead he's jogging. It's so poor from their perspective.

What Leny Yoro does, I have no idea. What kind of an effort is this to stop the ball? How easy is that? This isn't a 5-a-side competition. This is a big competition. You have to go and be aggressive. They both showed their inexperience and if that doesn't change, they won't play for Man United regularly.

I think you have to remember the job Michael Carrick did for them last season when Ruben Amorim was struggling.

He gave his squad players the chance today and it goes to show his squad players are not good enough to come in at this moment in time. I like [Ayden] Heaven and Leny Yoro but they're young players who need to be given time. Playing them both together, could that be a gamble?

They're conceding goals in the Premier League as well, so I don't think it's tactical. I just don't think they have got it right at the moment.

Sunday is a big game because you don't want to go into the international break off three losses in a row.

It was everything we hoped for, even more really, in some ways in Shea [Lacey] getting his goal. The night's gone in a different direction but I think for Shea for the moment in the academy and everyone who's been connected with his journey, to have a moment like which he should be celebrating and enjoying a little bit more really to have that start of the game. Then we let the game get away from us with the longer the game went.

"We ended up with a pretty disappointing night. It's obvious for me to say that. We accept that. We can't be in a position like that and lose the game in that manner. I'll understand the disappointments and frustrations. I accept that. That's on me. It'll need to be better than that."

On whether he's addressed that: "We can't change that. It's done. We've got to keep evolving as a group. We have to keep learning and dealing with situations. Sometimes they come a bit easier than others. Tonight was a tough one. We didn't find a way out of it. That's up to me and the staff to help the players and guide them through it. I think we all know that in the end tonight feels like a big disappointment.

"We've had small, little things that have gone against us in the last week or two and then it accumulates to feel that it's a lot bigger. I think we have to be honest and say that. The late goal against Everton from outside the box. The [Manchester] City goal the other day. It can all of a sudden roll into something a bit greater but I understand the disappointment because we shouldn't finish the game in that manner with the position we were in and we have to be humble and take that.
