Why Is Robert Sanchez Not Playing Today for Chelsea vs. Brighton?

Chelsea hosts Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge today after securing a victory on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. Xabi Alonso began his tenure as Chelsea boss with a 3-2 away win over Fulham, thanks to goals from Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.

Brighton also made a strong start to the season, securing a 4-0 win over Aston Villa. However, the Blues will be wary of their recent record against today’s opponent, having lost each of their last four meetings with Brighton.

One of the biggest stories ahead of the fixture was Chelsea’s signing of World Cup winner Emi Martínez from Aston Villa. The Argentine goalkeeper joined Alonso’s side on a three-year deal after a successful stint at Villa, where he helped the club win the Europa League last year.

Speaking after the move, Martínez expressed his happiness at joining Chelsea and his desire to get on the field as soon as possible.

“I am very happy to be part of this historic football club. Coming to Chelsea was a very easy decision for me and my family. I am at the peak of happiness now, and I want to get on the field with the team as soon as possible,”

Alonso appears to have listened to him, as the former Real Madrid midfielder-turned-manager has handed the veteran goalkeeper his first start for Chelsea today against Brighton, with Martínez replacing Robert Sánchez.

Why Is Robert Sánchez Not Playing Today?

Before the fixture, Alonso addressed Sánchez’s situation and admitted that he had to make some tough decisions when selecting his lineup.

“We’ll see. It was a decision we thought was good for the team, for the club. “Sometimes you have to take tough decisions because this one is an important one. But now we need to look forward.”

Sánchez conceded two goals in Chelsea’s opening Premier League match against Fulham and made some nervy mistakes during the game.

Reports also claim that the club is ready to offload the goalkeeper after the signing of Martinez.
