USA tennis star Coco Gauff has reached her first WTA 1000 quarter-final of the season, and in style, at the 2025 Madrid Open.

The 21-year-old fought to a straight-set victory over Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Belinda Bencic, winning 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16 clash on Monday (28 April).

Bencic and Gauff were evenly matched going into their third meeting of the 2025 season, with one win each and just a 125-point difference in this year's rankings in favour of the American.

Olympic gold medallist Bencic saved two break points at 2-3, but a superb winner down the line secured the break for Gauff at the third time of asking. Her six return winners in the opening set gave her a healthy advantage, along with a strong first-serve win percentage of 86%.

Gauff will take on seventh seed Mirra Andreeva in the WTA 1000 quarter-finals, who on the eve of her 18th birthday, defeated Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-1, 6-4.
