Manchester United's humbling 2-0 defeat at promoted Hull on the opening weekend of the season has left head coach Michael Carrick with a lot to think about as he prepares for Ipswich's visit to Old Trafford today.

That defeat at the MKM Stadium has put the Red Devils on the back foot and highlighted the transfer work that still needs to be done before the summer window closes. An immediate response is required but the Tractor Boys will be no pushovers, evidenced by their 2-1 win over Sunderland.

Manchester United vs Ipswich preview

After guiding Manchester United to third place last season and securing a return to the Champions League, Michael Carrick was appointed permanently as head coach in May and there was increased optimism surrounding the club heading into the summer transfer window.

However, new signings have not been as plentiful as fans would have hoped for. Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, Karl Darlow and Carlos Baleba are the four additions to a squad which is still lacking in several departments.

Defence remains an area of concern and United's frailties at the back were exposed by Hull on the opening weekend, when the Tigers enjoyed plenty of success from set-pieces as the opener came from a corner and the second was headed in from a free-kick.

Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven were the centre-back pairing for that defeat and that combination is unlikely to be a regular one, while left-back Luke Shaw remains a liability when up against pace and Noussair Mazraoui has yet to convince on the opposite flank.

While they failed to score against Hull, United still have plenty of options going forward. Bruno Fernandes is the chief creator while Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo provide a reliable source of goals.

Marcus Rashford started on the bench on the opening weekend but after he came on at half-time and managed to create four chances, it would be a big surprise if he doesn't start in place of Patrick Dorgu.

It is unlikely Ipswich, who have not won at Old Trafford since 1984, will be able to stop United scoring, but the Tractor Boys could still take a positive result back to Suffolk.

Gary O'Neil's side performed well in the 2-1 win over Sunderland in their first match and the display of Julio Enciso was of particular note, with his pace, dribbling and composure on the ball playing a huge role in the victory.

Ipswich followed up that league win with a 3-1 success over Leicester in the EFL Cup, a result which highlighted the attacking options in the squad but also the defensive problems.

But Ipswich are playing with real freedom, which perhaps should not be a surprise given they ended pre-season with four wins in a row, and they look worth backing to pick up either a win or draw from this trip to the Theatre of Dreams.

Pinpoint Nunez to play his part

Manchester United were woeful in defending set-pieces in the defeat to Hull and there looks to be a good chance for Marcelino Nunez to register his first assist of the season.

The Chile international is Ipswich's primary set-piece taker and he racked up eight assists in last season's Championship, leaving him joint-eighth in those charts.

Ipswich boast plenty of physicality and height in their side, notably 6ft 5in centre-back Issa Diop and 6ft 1in striker Emersonn, and those two have the ability to get on the end of one of Nunez's deliveries at Old Trafford.
