Kim Birrell is locked 3-3 in a second set tiebreaker against Petra Marcinko.

But the players are now sitting down with umbrellas over them due to rain.

“Some rain drops coming down here, just to add to the drama,” Brenton Speed says on Nine.

Birrell has to win the tiebreaker to force a third set.

Jelena Dokic says “what a time to stop play here”.

“It’s tough for both players,” Dokic says.

“If you play a couple of loose points here, the tiebreak is basically done.”

The match was already moved forward due to the wet weather forecast.

Play was also stopped in the Novak Djokovic match on Arthur Ashe Stadium, but the roof has been closed and play has resumed.

Former longtime Australian Open boss Craig Tiley is copping some heat already in his debut tournament in charge of the US Open.

Just a couple of months after leaving Australia and taking the top job in the States, Tiley overhauled the US Open draw to stage the first round over three days, rather than two.

The Australian Open made the change several years ago, starting the tournament on Sunday. Tiley said at the time that it was to alleviate issues with scheduling that caused matches in the early rounds to finish well beyond midnight.

But there is criticism today of the US Open move, given thousands of fans have gathered and there is less tennis being played because the draw is stretched over an extra day.

One of the critics, James Denman, tweeted “the USTA seems to have genuinely f---ed the US Open. I know it’s always busy but this just reads... awful”.

At his press conference on Sunday, Tiley outlined his dream for the US Open to become “tennis Disneyland”.

He has also increased prize money for the tournament.
