Pundit Paul Merson believes that Liverpool are not getting the credit that they deserve for their start of the season. The Reds got another title race boost on Sunday afternoon with Arsenal drawing against Chelsea.

That result came after Liverpool took advantage of Man City dropping three points against Brighton in a 2-1 loss. Just a couple of hours later, Arne Slot’s men recorded a 2-0 win over Aston Villa to move five points ahead of their rivals.

The win also moved them 10 points above Arsenal, ahead of their match against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon. It was a game labelled as ‘must-win’ for the Gunners by their former player.

“I still think Arsenal need to win this football match. 10 points behind Liverpool who are a very good team,” Merson said on Sky Sports’ coverage ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash against Chelsea. “I think Liverpool are not getting the credit they deserve at the moment, if I’m being honest.

“Everybody’s thinking, ‘Oh, well, Man City lost’. But Liverpool are spread-eagling at the moment. 10 points is a lot.”

He added: “This is a must-win game for Arsenal. 10 points. Liverpool could go on and lose two or three more games, Arsenal have got no room [for error].”

The game between Chelsea and Arsenal finished in a 1-1 draw. The Gunners were pegged back by their opponents after taking the lead in the second half, Arsenal are now winless in their last four Premier League games.

While fellow pundit Gary Neville agreed on the importance of the game for Arsenal, he still feels that they can challenge Liverpool and Man City for the title despite the draw. Ahead of the match, he said: “I think Arsenal have got to win today, I agree with Paul Merson.

“I won’t say ‘must-win’, but I think they’ve got that mentality to go and win and get back to that point whereby they’re really seen as challengers for the title. I strongly believe they are.”

Liverpool travel to Southampton after the international break while Arsenal host Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium. Man City, meanwhile host Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium in what could be another big week in the title race.
