Katerina Siniakova, Henry Patten defeat Aryna Sabalenka, Novak Djokovic in US Open mixed doubles

It was the battle of the best singles tennis players versus the best doubles players with Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic falling to Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten in US Open mixed doubles.

Sabalenka is a former Grand Slam doubles champion, so she was the most accomplished in both disciplines on the court.

The difference ultimately was Patten, the British doubles star, who served impeccably. In an ironic twist, Patten and Siniakova had to qualify to get into this tournament despite being the best doubles players in the world. Siniakova and Patten claimed a 1-4, 4-2, 10-2.

Arthur Ashe Stadium was packed for the match

There are plenty of critics for this reimagined format with abbreviated scoring; however, the fans are turning out en masse to see mixed doubles, which combines singles and doubles stars in the draw.

In short order, Siniakova and Patten, down a set and a break against Sabalenka and Djokovic, will take on the married duo of Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils who won the first match of the day over Alexandra Eala and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Svitolina and Monfils had an hour break between matches; whereas, Siniakova and Patten had about about five minutes.

Siniakova arm issue is a concern

Hopefully Siniakova's bicep is okay. She had it strapped and was shaking it out often. The duo found their rhythm and started playing aggressively and often caught Sabalenka and Djokovic out of position.

In the match happening concurrently, Karolina Muscova and Jakub Mensik, the Czechia team, defeated doubles specialists Kristina Mladenovic and Marcelo Arevalo.
