US Open bracket updates, schedule, matchups

The US Open semifinals are set.

The quarterfinals were a marathon that featured the longest match in the major's history. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz was ousted by American star Ben Shelton in five sets. The match lasted four and a half hours and finished after 3 a.m. in New York.

There will definitely be an American player competing for the men's title because one of the semifinal matches features Shelton facing off against Frances Tiafoe. The Maryland native had his own battle in the quarterfinals and outlasted another contender from the United States, Alex Michelsen.

On the other side of the men's bracket, No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev cruised through the quarterfinals, beating Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets. The French Open winner will face Karen Khachanov, who advanced when Alexander Blockx retired due to injury.

In the women's competition, there is potential for an American to be in the final. No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula handled fellow U.S. player Emma Navarro in her quarterfinals match. She now has the task of toppling No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka. The defending champion advanced by besting Wimbledon winner Linda Nosková.

No. 4 seed Coco Gauff rallied to win her quarterfinals match over No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva. The 2023 US Open winner will hope to continue that momentum against Elena Rybakina. The No. 2 seed became the new top-ranked player in women's tennis when she beat Qinwen Zheng.
