Manchester United have started the Ruben Amorim era and fans are hoping that he can bring sustained success back to Old Trafford.

After a three-week wait, Manchester United fans were finally given a first peek at the Ruben Amorim era on Sunday afternoon.

Amorim was appointed by United back on November 1 but his final few games with Sporting and they international break meant a delayed start.

The 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town started so well with Marcus Rashford’s opener but United just couldn’t build on that.

Amorim wants more control from United moving forward and he certainly knows the scale of the job ahead of him.

Fully becoming an Amorim team will take some time and a number of transfer windows but United have to back him moving forward.

Nani delivers verdict on Ruben Amorim to Manchester United

Amorim follows in the footsteps of two Portuguese footballing legends by joining United.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho both headed to Old Trafford too whilst Nani became a cult hero after leaving Sporting for United.

MORE UNITED STORIES

We looked back at Nani’s past comments on Amorim around the time of his appointment with the ex-United winger certainly a big fan.

Rio Ferdinand shared Nani’s view on Amorim too, suggesting that he had indicated the United players would ‘love him’.

Nani faced Amorim in one of his final Sporting games and has now delivered comments on Amorim’s move to Old Trafford.

Speaking to A Bola, Nani admitted that he really believes Amorim will do a good job at United.

Nani noted that this isn’t just about Amorim though, calling on those around him to really step up and put the work in to succeed.

Nani added that Amorim needs time to excel but will eventually prove himself as the right man for the job.

“It’s always difficult to say who the right man is, but I really believe he will do a good job,” said Nani.

“But it doesn’t just depend on him and what he will bring to the club. It also depends on whether the people who will work with him will be prepared for the demands, to return to being winners. But I believe he will be successful at the club, as he has already shown at Sporting.

“Of course, it’s not just a matter of arriving and changing players overnight, I think it takes time. He will work hard and will show that he was a good appointment,” he added.

Nani on Sporting without Ruben Amorim

Amorim smashed Manchester City in his final Champions League game with Sporting but they suffered much more against English opposition this week.

Arsenal strolled into Lisbon and hammered Sporting 5-1, handing Joao Pereira a heavy defeat.

Some will point to Amorim’s move to United as a key factor but Nani has pleaded for patience.

Nani noted that Sporting are having an ‘excellent season’ and have some top players at Pereira’s disposal.

Amorim’s departure makes things ‘difficult’ for Sporting in Nani’s eyes but believes that Sporting will get back on track and bounce back from Amorim’s exit.

“It is not very fair to talk about Sporting now,” said Nani. “Sporting has been having an excellent season, has shown excellent football, and has excellent players. It is a very consistent structure and they know what they are doing.

“Of course it is a difficult time, because they changed coach, now they have to adapt to a new coach, but I believe that the success will continue and will remain at the club because the foundations are already there. They have the talent and quality to continue,” he added.
