Sources: Yankuba Minteh to Liverpool update after Cody Gakpo news

The 22-year-old had been a leading target for Andoni Iraola's side this summer before they were priced out of a late move by Brighton's lofty asking price.

However, while the addition of a new winger remains a priority for Liverpool, failure to land an alternative could see them revisit the Gambia international.

This comes as Man City advance on a move for Cody Gakpo, who has decided to join the Premier League giants ahead of his other principal suitors, Tottenham.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Liverpool remain very keen on Minteh and will keep a close eye on his return from injury.

Alongside Brighton's lofty valuation, an ankle injury also meant Liverpool had second thoughts, as he is set to be ruled out for weeks beyond the end of the window.

Liverpool are set to keep a close eye on his recovery, and while much will depend on whether they can land reinforcements this summer, a move for Minteh is not off the table.

What is the latest on Yankuba Minteh to Liverpool?

Football Insider revealed on 28 August that Liverpool's pursuit of Minteh is "dead in the water" as far as a deal goes in the final stages of the summer transfer window.

After seeing two official bids rejected by Brighton, the Reds have set their sights on alternative targets, and have now cooled their interest in the Gambia winger.

However, failure to land those new targets could see them return for Minteh when he recovers from his injury, with a mid-season deal now being considered.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "I think that deal for Yankuba Minteh is probably dead in the water now.

"Liverpool made a couple of bids. £50million, the first one, rejected, then it went up to £60million, that was rejected, and Brighton were holding out for a fee of £80million which Liverpool weren't keen on meeting.

"It's one that maybe Liverpool might revisit in January if they don't bring in another right winger between now and then.

"He is a player who Andoni Iraola rates very highly, so if the opportunity to sign him did come up in January, I'm sure it would be something he would be keen to revisit."

Which other wingers are on Liverpool's radar?

After it became clear that Minteh would not join Liverpool this late in the summer window, the Reds have been forced to consider multiple alternatives in the market.

The recruitment team at Anfield has identified a number of options who fit their criteria, notably including Crystal Palace star Ismaila Sarr, who ranks high on their list.

Football Insider revealed on 28 August that Crystal Palace are extremely reluctant to lose Sarr after they rejected an opening offer worth £50million from Liverpool.

However, the Reds are expected to return with an improved offer before the 1 September deadline and hope they can move closer to an agreement.

The Senegal international is now one of their top targets in his position, and is believed to be keen on making the move to Anfield in the coming days.
