Wojciech Szczesny has revealed how Robert Lewandowski “was the first person who called” him to talk about a possible move to Barcelona.

The goalkeeper has signed with the Catalans for the rest of the season following Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s long-term injury.

Szczesny says that Lewandowski played a key role in making the move happen.

“He was the first person who called me to look into the possibility of this happening because I was retired,” he told the media. “At first I wasn’t ready for new challenges but I spoke to my family and friends and they all told me it would be a mistake not to accept this. That’s why Robert played a very important role because he was the person who had the idea to convince me.”

Szczesny also spoke about his pride at coming out of retirement to play for Barcelona.

“It’s a proud moment. I was honestly prepared for retirement. I was happy in that situation but being here these first two days in the city and seeing how people have treated me and how important it is to them has made me feel proud and part of this exciting family,” he added. “Although it’s a great institution and a great football club, I’ve felt the feeling of family. Family is very important to me and now I’ve extended it a little. “I have always been a fan. I can see the passion of the fans, it was great to watch the game in the stadium, the team looks interesting. This challenge is exciting for me. I face it with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. I am ready to work hard and take on the challenges that come this season.”

The 34-year-old watched Barcelona beat Young Boys on Tuesday night and will now link up with his team-mates and battle for a spot in the team.
