Furious Man United fans are stunned by Mason Mount training update, it goes against what he said

Mason Mount started the campaign with a lot to prove after a disappointing first season with Manchester United.

The Red Devils splashed £55m to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea in 2023, but the English midfielder has endured a nightmare spell at Old Trafford since his arrival.

He only played 756 minutes of football last season across 20 appearances after missing half of the calendar with a calf injury.

Mount suffered a hamstring injury at the start of this season which caused him to miss another three games, and on his return against Spurs he had to be taken off because of a head injury.

Erik ten Hag is a huge admirer of Mount and has stuck by him despite his constant injury setbacks, but Ten Hag is now at risk of being sacked and his marquee midfield signing is unavailable again when he is needed most.

Mount’s injury nightmare continued against Tottenham. He came off the bench at half-time to shore up the midfield following Bruno Fernandes’ red card.

However, he was then brought off with five minutes remaining after suffering a cut to his head.

Mount insisted it was “just a scratch” in his post-match injury update and it seemed United’s No.7 would be fine to return in time for Thursday’s Europa League match against Porto.

However, The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell revealed on social media that Mount missed United’s training session on Wednesday morning as a “precaution”.

He added: “No Mason Mount though. Precaution due to cut on head – but no concussion, doubt for Porto.”

If Mount’s absence was not due to concussion protocol as suggested, then it is baffling that United’s £55m midfielder could miss what is a must-win game for Ten Hag, especially after describing the injury as a “scratch” a few days before.

That was certainly the feeling of United supporters on X, who are quickly running out of patience with Mount.

One supporter wrote: “Didn’t he say small scratch? Bruno has played with a broken finger for us” while another added, “A cut, on his head… is keeping him out of a must win game?”

A third fan posted: “Exactly why this United team is a joke. Vidic played with bandages on his head.” Another was also quick to question Mount’s update on the weekend “But he himself said it’s only a scratch”

If they weren’t already, United fans have begun to turn on Mount. “55m for this injury prone mess. What a joke,” posted one fan.

Another wrote: “Sums up his mentality really. Said himself its a small cut but nah, dont feel like training today really”.

It must be said that Mount is only a doubt for Porto and has not been ruled out of playing a part, but it is not a good look for a United star who is also in a make-or-break period in his career.
