Jones and Elliott respond to Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon amid Liverpool links

Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott each reacted to a new update on social media from Anthony Gordon amid rumours of him being set to join Liverpool from Newcastle this summer.

Newcastle’s stellar 2024/25 domestic campaign means they are back in the Champions League for next season, and speedy winger Gordon once again played a key part in their success.

Former scout Mick Brown told Football Insider back in April that Gordon is the most likely star player to leave Newcastle this summer amid interest from Liverpool and Arsenal.

Football Insider recently revealed that Liverpool have been told it would take an offer of £75-80million to sign Gordon, with Newcastle unwilling to sell him this summer due to their lack of PSR concerns.

He has continued to be linked with a move away from St James’ Park, and Gordon was recently pictured on holiday with Liverpool star Jones, which has only fuelled the rumours of him potentially being set to move back to his native Merseyside.

Gordon registered nine goals and seven assists in 42 games in all competitions last season, and he has also been busy in the off-season, judging by his Instagram page, after he took to the site on Tuesday, 8 July, to post numerous pictures of him on holiday and also at Wimbledon, with Reds man Jones again making an appearance.

The 24-year-old’s update was duly reacted to by Jones, who commented with fingers crossed and red heart emojis, while Newcastle teammate Sven Botman replied: “Man like tonyy” and exit-linked Magpies man Chris Willock responded saying: “Class act.”

Liverpool forward Elliott, who has been linked to Borussia Dortmund, liked Gordon’s post, while England teammates Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze all followed suit, as did the likes of Valentino Livramento, Jacob Murphy and Joelinton.

Liverpool should push for Gordon and sell Luis Diaz

Football Insider verdict

Jones and Gordon were each born in Liverpool and have played for the England national team together over the last few years, and Reds supporters will hope that their local-lad midfielder is trying to urge the Magpies man to push to join him at Anfield ahead of the new season.

Liverpool should definitely make a genuine play to sign him soon, especially after recent reports of Barcelona’s interest in Luis Diaz, with the Colombian international looking to depart the Merseyside outfit in the coming months.

Replacing Diaz with Gordon for little overall outlay would represent great business, as the Newcastle man is homegrown, much younger, and the exact type of winger that Slot needs right now to complement the likes of Florian Wirtz and Mo Salah.

Newcastle’s likely stubbornness in negotiations to sell him could well prove to be a major stumbling block in getting him to Anfield, but attempting to sign him is definitely worth a try from Liverpool’s point of view.
