Liverpool hope to be busy in the closing days of the transfer window but there is also pressing need for them to secure a victory against Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

Liverpool's late leveller at Newcastle was nowhere near enough to satisfy high expectations and there could be further frustration for Andoni Iraola's side, who may struggle to defeat Nottingham Forest in their first home game of the season.

When the Merseysiders announced Iraola as their replacement for Arne Slot, the decision was widely acclaimed.

However, it is already becoming clear that the new man in the dugout is going to need plenty of patience from fans.

Iraola will be more aware than most that it takes time to build a successful team.

The Spaniard's Bournemouth side were winless in their opening nine league games, but he oversaw three seasons of steady progress for the Cherries, who finished 12th, ninth and sixth in his three seasons in charge.

Iraola's record commands respect but, like any manager, he needs the right tools to carry out the job and there is mounting evidence that the situation at Liverpool is far from straightforward.

Liverpool scraped Champions League qualification last season but they were winless in their final four games and their 60-point tally was the club's joint-lowest in the top flight since 2011-12.

Last Sunday's 2-2 draw against a Newcastle side weakened by the sale of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes offered further insight into how far the team has slipped in such a short space of time.

Newcastle played with energy and enthusiasm and twice exposed the Reds with goals from rapid counter-attacks.

The Magpies' fairly simple tactics could be mirrored by Liverpool's future opponents, including Nottingham Forest, who have won their last two Anfield encounters without conceding.

Forest are also under new leadership and under pressure after suffering a pair of home losses to Leeds in Oliver Glasner's first two matches at the helm.

And the straight talking Glasner has already delivered a reality check by admitting that he needs time to turn around the fortunes of a side who finished 16th last season.

Glasner faces some challenges, including the need to fill the Elliot Anderson-sized hole in his midfield. But he continues to be backed in the transfer market and centre-forward Liam Delap is the latest to arrive at the City Ground in a £50 million deal.

In the short term the Austrian needs a few results to win over the fans and retain the confidence of notoriously trigger-happy owner Evangelos Marinakis, and there is a big opportunity for his team to put at least a point on the board this weekend.

Forest are clearly a work in progress, but they were a goalkeeping error away from starting the season with a solid draw at home to Leeds and they can follow up with a draw or possibly better on Merseyside.

As well as being vulnerable to counter-attacks, Liverpool have a weakness from dead ball situations.

They conceded 20 set-piece goals last season, more than any top-flight team, and their vulnerability in that area could be targeted by the visitors.
