Novak Djokovic shared some kind words about Nishesh Basavareddy following their Australian Open clash.

On Monday the American made his Grand Slam debut against the most successful player to play at these events.

He certainly made the most of his time on Arthur Ashe Stadium against the 10-time Australian Open winner, taking him to four sets.

Basavareddy ultimately came up short in the biggest match of his career, but he gave a good account of himself, which Novak Djokovic acknowledged.

What did Novak Djokovic say to Nishesh Basavareddy on Instagram?

Djokovic began his 2025 Australian Open campaign by losing the first set to Nishesh Basavareddy.

He made some uncharacteristic errors at important moments, but the 37-year-old soon hit his stride, especially once Basavareddy started to cramp and fatigue in the second set.

Djokovic reduced his error count and there was no way back for the teenager as the World seven claimed a 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-2 win.

On Tuesday the 24-time Grand Slam champion took to Instagram to congratulate his opponent for such a spirited performance.

Great to be back in Melbourne. Well played Nishesh Basavareddy impressive slam debut” he wrote. “Onwards to R2.”

Novak Djokovic comments on having coach Andy Murray courtside

For the first time Djokovic had his coach Andy Murray courtside as he commenced his 2025 Australian Open campaign.

The Brit was not present when Djokovic played in Brisbane, but he is in Melbourne and was seen giving his player some tips before the start of the fourth set.

Murray seemed to be offering advice on Djokovic’s backhand, which was received well and he cruised through set four for the loss of just two games.

Post-match, Djokovic, who will play Portugal’s Jaime Faria in the second round, summed up how he felt about having Murray in his box for the first time. “I’m thrilled to have him in my corner,” he said.

“I must say that it’s a bit strange to have him courtside in my box. We played for over 20 years against each other at the highest level, so it’s nice to have him on my side of the net.

“He gave me some great advice during the match. It’s really nice to be able to exchange some feedback. It’s been a really nice experience, hopefully we don’t stop here.”
