Chris Davies makes Jay Stansfield point after Alfie May combo pays off for Birmingham City

Chris Davies has praised Jay Stansfield for his ‘unselfishness’ to set up strike partner Alfie May in Birmingham City’s latest victory.

May scored the only goal of the game against Huddersfield to hand Blues their seventh successive League One victory. Davies' team are now five points clear at the top of the table and have a game-in-hand on several of the teams below them.

The goal was created by Stansfield who selflessly squared the ball to May instead of trying to score himself.

"It was a really good team move," said Davies. "Jay’s attracted the defender out of the space to play the ball wide and then attacked the space without the ball. It was exceptional attacking play.

"Alfons has weighted a pass perfectly and just to have the presence of mind, but also the unselfishness to square the ball for your teammate, is what the best strikers do. They see someone else has the chance to score and they will square it. You can only score if you arrive in the finishing zone and that’s what Alfie did."

Stansfield and May missed three gilt-edged chances before the latter struck in the 63rd minute. May headed over from underneath the crossbar in the first half and Stansfield skewed wide either side of half-time.

Davies added: "They are both goalscorers. I don’t think missing a chance will stop them getting in there. I thought they both played really well and I’m pleased with the goal."

Unsurprisingly, Davies was also delighted to collect another three points. The last four victories have been secured over teams expected to be vying for promotion with Blues.

"I was really pleased," said the Blues boss, who watched the game from the stands due to a touchline suspension. "It’s the first time this season we’ve played two league games in such quick succession. I think we were very good and controlled the game from early on. We played some really good football and attacked the right spaces, showed discipline in how we played, we created multiple chances and it could have been more, but I was really pleased with the performance."
