Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk issues warning as Arne Slot makes Darwin Nunez claim

Liverpool continued their impressive start to the season, seeing off Bologna as Arne Slot's record start continues, but Virgil van Dijk has issued a timely warning to his team-mates

Liverpool made light work of Bologna on Tuesday with Crystal Palace their next assignment.

The Reds will head to Selhurst Park this weekend as they look to continue their impressive form with Arne Slot currently making light of replacing Jurgen Klopp. The Dutchman has largely enjoyed generous fixtures to begin his reign but still has the Reds sat nicely on top of the Premier League.

Their trip to the Eagles will be their final match before another international break with the Merseysiders looking to improve on last year's title charge, which saw them fade away in the final weeks. Despite their successes there is an acceptance that Liverpool still have a long way to go - which they have recognised.

Here's the latest from Anfield.

Van Dijk's challenge

Virgil van Dijk still believes Liverpool are a work in progress despite their impressive start to the campaign. Only once have they lost in the league and they've begun their European campaign in the best possible way. Their centre-half though insists performances like the one at the weekend shows they still have some building to do.

“100 per cent,” Van Dijk said, when he was asked if Slot’s team were still a work in progress. “I think it was very clear to see after Wolves. “We had a good meeting in my opinion after the game in terms of how to manage the game much better, how not to let opponents come back into the game and it is obviously still a work in progress.

“We are still learning game management with experience and try to deal with difficult situations that occur during games. The Wolves game was a good example of how to not do it."

Nunez criticism dismissed

Slot has rubbished criticism of Darwin Nunez's poor goalscoring record and defended his frontman amid claims his form is worrying. The former Benfica striker saw a goal ruled out for offside in midweek and was eventually replaced on the hour mark.

The Uruguayan scored his only goal of the season in victory over Bournemouth - and that was the first time he he had hit the back of the net for the Reds since April. Slot though does not believe that Nunez's efforts this season can be judged after only three starts.

"I don’t think it’s fair to say he only scored one [goal since April] because you also have to look at the playing time," Slot said. "I think this was his third start of the season so I don’t look at it in the way you do and only focus on the individual."

Slot's record start

Slot can now boast the best start of any Liverpool boss after winning his eight match out of nine since taking over at Anfield. The Dutchman had big shoes to fill but has settled into his role impressive, securing a second Champions League success of the season as the Reds beat Bologna.

Thus far the former Feyenoord manager has a near perfect record with the shock reverse at the hands of Nottingham Forest the only black mark on his record. Slot has worked with the squad he inherited after a quiet summer, but has put his mark on the side.

His biggest statement so far coming at Old Trafford, where Liverpool hammered Manchester United 3-0. He's also overseen wins against the likes of Brentford, Ipswich, Wolves and West Ham.
